Here are some examples of where the Parental Controls fall short YouTube has addictive & problematic content. Specifically, YouTube Shorts is built like the scrolling content feeds in TikTok or Instagram but there are no YouTube Shorts specific parental controls. The content controls are observably less consistent on Shorts than on regular YouTube. TikTok has addictive & problematic content and data and privacy issues. While it does actually have fairly strict parental controls, TikTok is observably the most addictive. TikTok is also currently being sued by the DOJ for child data privacy concerns. There is a persistent bug in Apple parental screen time controls (Apple is aware and has been in no rush to fix it—its been literal years). Our child does NOT need: The internet in his pocket ← This honestly takes all smartphones off the table. Because while you can disable browsers, there are sneaky ways to get to the internet– especially on iPhones. I think it's important to clarify here that I'm not saying he can’t use the internet, I just don’t think he needs it with him all the time. If needs to look something up he can do that at home. Social media ← this also takes all smartphones off the table. I just would prefer to avoid the temptation of even seeing it in the app store A “cool’ phone ← iPhones are the coolest phone option and many kids only want that. I am choosing to not factory this in and brace for whatever blowback I may get. We gave them to our kids so they could walk to and from school alone & hang on the playground after school without us wondering where they are. They allow kids some freedom. They help parents untether. The cons, however, are more significant than I first realized. Schools without strong smartwatch policies or policies that aren’t being enforced are now environments where learning is being frequently interrupted. They are reducing our children’s ability to learn and stay focused. If smartwatches aren’t set up correctly – school mode on, fun stuff limited or removed entirely, they can be worse learning distractions than phones. My best advice on elementary smartwatches is this Give a smartwatch, intentionally e.g. to unlock some independence. I do not recommend them as a form of entertainment Make sure your child’s watch has school mode on or better yet, insist that they leave the watch in their backpack during the day (even if this is not the policy) Coach your child on communication etiquette. Practice with them so learn when it is appropriate to call or text and what are appropriate phone or text manners.
